The concept of this app was based off positive psychologist, Martin Seligman and his Theories of Authentic Happiness, and re-designing his 24 Signature Strengths survey in an app format. I knew I wanted to achieve 2 things: 1. Re-phrase and re-design the Signature Strengths Survey 2. Create a way for people who have taken the survey to actually hold themselves accountable for actually employing these newfound strengths in their everyday life. Wonder Lab made up one-third of my fall 2011 semester. Its purpose was to immerse yourself in an unfamiliar situation, and from there, identify any kind of existing problems, and design new solutions to these problems. Our solutions were reached by constantly following (and changing) a "guiding" question. My partner, Victor Ng, and I started off with the randomly selected words of: Playground, Comedy, Seniors (65+) and Trophy. Explorations within this lab included:Improv Class: Forcing ourselves out of our comfort zone, and learning from strangers - inspired us to further explore the ideas of humor, anonymity, and improv in everyday life. OMG CMU:A Facebook group, "liked" by over 750 people, which was our solution to connecting strangers on Carnegie Mellon's campus via humor. Humor Me!: Our eventual final deliverable, which was a "kit for designers," that utilized humor and improv games to inspire creativity. The goal was to create a community around the idea of an urban garden. We took it in the direction of implementing a community garden system in a fictional apartment building. We provided the information about gardening and growing crops for the residents, and designed the system in which they would share their goods with each other, and therefore foster a community. I worked on the "growing" calendar and designing the overall system of the High Rise Gardens. Truman came into office during a war he knew little about, following in FDR's enormous footsteps, and under intense public scrutiny, and eventually faced with the extremely difficult decision of whether or not to drop the first atomic bombs in Japan. The magnitude of stress in these situations, and the ways in which he dealt with them have always resonated with me, and I wanted to re-interpret his story in a way that all audiences, (especially younger ones), would empathize with. Open publication - Free publishing - More biography McCullough's book is 1,120 pages. I selected the parts I found to be the most intriguing and re-designed the content's structure by weaving these fragmented parts together. I selected quotes I thought were especially telling and created typographic spreads that introduced each section. Additionally, the digital collages worked as imagery that were both humorous, but also informative of a critical situation Truman was put in as President. <img The "Designer's Tacklebox" is a set of tools, intended for designers and other creative thinkers, to help them brainstorm, develop, and mock-up ideas. The ideas behind the Tacklebox were rapid idea generation and prototyping, and not being concerned with whether or not an idea was "silly." My favorite part of the Tacklebox are the brainstorming dice, which combine a topic, such as "Money," and a method, such as "Giving Object Emotion." These random combinations force you to think of a product or solution - such as stuffed animal that deteriorates as you spend money that you don't need to. <img
